In 1949, (when Nfld joined Canada), the Newfoundland Rangers were disbanded and the Newfoundland Constabulary was then only responsible for the city of St. John's. All the rest of Newfoundland & Labrador was policed by the R.C.M.P.. The Newfoundland Constabulary became the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary in 1979. In 1982, 1986 & 1986, the R.N.C. expanded it's patrol area to include the Avalon Penninsula, Labrador West and the city of Corner Brook.
